Scion xD

The Scion xD is a new sporty hatchback to be introuduced by Scion for 2008. It is slated to replace the xA which was discontinued at the end of the 2006 model year. The vehicle was unveiled at an invitation-only no-camera event in Miami on December 16, 2006 along with the next-generation xB. Both vehicles were unveiled on February 8, 2007 at the Chicago Auto Show.[1] The new xD will begin appearing in Scion showrooms in summer 2007. The 2008 Scion xD will be a 5 door vehicle, much like the 2006 xA.

The vehicle will come standard with power locks, mirrors, and windows, and 16" wheels and tires. The vehicle will have ABS, and side curtain air bags as standard features.

The xD is essentially a five-door Toyota Yaris. The five-door Yaris is not available in the U.S., most likely because the xD is too similar to the five-door Yaris sold in other markets. The xD features the same sliding and reclining rear seat that is optional on the Yaris three-door. Unlike the Yaris, however, the xD's instrument gauges are located behind the steering wheel as opposed to being centered atop the dashboard.

A choice from three new head units will be available on all 2008 Scions. All sound systems feature six speakers and standard iPod connectivity. The base head unit has 10 changeable backlit colors, MP3, WMA, and AAC CD compatibility, and Scion's SSP equalizer presets. The Premium head unit features a small LCD that can display pictures and movies downloaded from Pioneer's website in addition to the features on the base unit. A navigation system will also be avaliable. The AVN system can play DVD movies in addition to GPS functionality and the features of the base system, aside from the backlit color choices. The xD is the first mainstream subcompact in the U.S. to be available with a built-in, OEM navigation system.

The front-wheel-drive xD will come with the 2ZR-FE DOHC 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine with dual VVT-i that makes 128 bhp and 125 lb.-ft. of torque. It can be mated to either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic.
